I love being around people even if it’s just in traffic, all together between car doors and windows. Nobody really dares to look at each other, like being in a car is a private affair. It’s really not, because we’re in public. It’s one of those little social norms that used to make me feel resentful of people, and social norms, and society; I saw it as a symptom of disconnection that ran deep in our culture. But now I see it as something sort of beautiful, but not ideal. Pretending to ignore each other in cars is another little courtesy we offer to one another just like blinkers, and stopping on red and driving in between the lines. All these rules let us care for one another. But sometimes I just want to look at someone next to me at a stoplight, and I don’t want to feel weird about it.
